PPD Basics
The purified protein derivative (PPD, aka TB/Tuberculin/Mantoux Test) is used to test for tuberculosis.
A positive PPD (swelling at the injection site within 2-3 days) will indicate:
- Prior exposure to tuberculosis (or prior receipt of BCG vaccine)
- Most often, inactive infection (if any)
Individuals who have a positive PPD will require a chest x-ray to check for active infection.
